Essay ยท The big question

Why is abstract art considered art?

"My kid could paint that" is the oldest line in the gallery. It deserves an honest answer โ€” not a sneer. Here's the real case for abstract art, and how to tell the genuine from the lazy.

A large colourful abstract painting
No subject, no scene โ€” and yet it can still stop you in your tracks.

Art was never only about copying reality

For most of history, painting did aim to depict โ€” saints, kings, fruit bowls. But once the camera arrived in the 1800s, perfect likeness became cheap. Painters asked a new question: if a photo can copy the world, what can paint do that a photo can't? Abstraction is one bold answer. (It's part of the same story of art movements making arguments.)

What abstract art is actually doing

Strip away the subject and you're left with the raw tools โ€” colour, shape, line, rhythm, scale โ€” used directly on your emotions. A Rothko isn't "two rectangles"; it's an attempt to make colour alone feel like awe or grief. Abstraction trades what you see for how it makes you feel.

So could your kid paint that? Often, the surface โ€” no. But the decision to paint it, at that scale, in that moment in history, with that intent? That's the part that's hard, and that's the part that counts.

How to judge whether it's any good

If you want to place this in time, read modern vs. contemporary art. And for curiosity well beyond the gallery, Infoozle is a good, broad read.
